From 1988 -1989, I served as in-house industrial editor to Santambank Ltd’s corporate communications division, responsible for the bank’s inter-branch communications, liaison with strategic corporate clients and government, the education of its vehicle finance dealer network, and liaison with the broader financial media. With the amalgamation of the bank with Trust Bank, and the subsequent merger with two other banks to form ABSA, the position became redundant.

In 1990 I took up employment with the Chamber of Mines as production manager of its in-house magazine and newspapers. Skills in DTP publishing, printing, photography, journalism and editing were further honed, whilst interaction with newsmakers presented an opportunity to interact with people of all walks of life.

My expertise and positive attitude towards my profession were noticed by a corporate member of the Chamber of Mines, who invited me to take up the newly formed investor relations position. Genbel Investments Ltd, which then served as the investment arm to the greater Gencor group (Sappi Ltd, Engen Ltd, Malbak Ltd, Gengold Ltd, Samancor Ltd) was in the midst of a campaign to reposition itself as an independent “country fund”. (Now part of Sanlam)

I was highly interested in the investor relations and behavioral finance fields, and soon became one of the pioneers and recognized spokespersons in this field in South Africa. In 1994, moves were afoot to amalgamate Genbel with Sanlam, which required a move to Cape Town. I elected to divert my energies to developing a business offering for the South African market after the completion of a MA (Communications) degree, and registered Southgro Investor Relations (Pty) Ltd in 1994, which subsequently grew in reputation for being a research-based agency servicing technology-driven companies.

In 2003, I launched the first elevation pitch conference in South Africa for the Wine & Spirit Industries, Leisure Assets & Resort development, as well as the Life Sciences industry. Of international standard, the Lifesparks 2005 biotechnology and medical devices conference was sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and Acorn Technologies incubator.

Late 2005, I sold my business interests to my longstanding business partner and a BEE consortium.

I was privileged to be invited by London AIM-listed gemstone mining company, Tanzanite One in 2006 to assist the company in managing the downsizing of its South African office, its local company secretarial and corporate affairs portfolio, as well as investor relations and corporate / product branding program. In addition to liaison with all board members, stakeholders and staff; drafting its earnings announcements, annual reports and other corporate announcements, one of my key responsibilities was to train a Tanzanian team to take up the IR function at the termination of my contract.

Since then, I have been involved in the shaping of the investor marketing programs of Dwyka Resources Ltd, Sylvania Ltd and Danyland Ltd, in addition to consulting to other JSE-listed companies, including Winhold Ltd and Thabex Ltd.

Having expanded my knowledge over the past 15 years in institutional and strategic investor targeting of publicly traded companies on the local as well as foreign stock exchanges, I am willing to work on an outsourced or in-sourced project or full-time basis as an investor relations officer or equivalent. This function can be fulfilled in-house or if the client requires, I can act as a trainer and builder of in-house capacity.

I work best in a challenging, entrepreneurial and goal-driven environment. The activities may include developing strategic investor relations programmes in positioning companies or portfolios for prospective investment, preparing exchange announcements, content presentation at investment seminars and conferences, conducting investor presentations during capital raising road shows to local life insurance and asset management companies, private equity firms, stockbrokers and or independent financial advisors. I am comfortable working with prospective investors, be they local or foreign, and across the investment spectrum – venture capital, private equity and securities.

I have worked with companies active in a wide spectrum of industries, including the mining, financial, ITCE , retail and healthcare sectors. Having obtained a BA (Communications) Honours degree with cum laude from the University of Potchefstroom (today North-West), I completed my MA (Communications) at the Rand Afrikaans University in 1995.

I was also awarded a Certificate in Accounting, Control and Finance from the Graduate School of Business Administration of the University of the Witwatersrand in 1993.
